Sunrise and Banat-i Hill

I took these pictures years ago when digital camera was unheard of...by non-techies like me. I was using one of the Canon Rebel series. Trying to use it for the first time, I chanced on a particularly beautiful, foggy morning and eagerly took these pictures.

Sunset at Tagbilaran Bay

The K of C (Knight of Columbus) promenade is a favorite spot to watch beautiful sunsets. From there, you get to view the seascape without distractions being far enough from the noise of traffic and city sounds. You can see the pier, the causeway, a part of coastal Dauis and its resorts and on clear days, part of Cebu.

Although I haven't been there for months now, it's not because I think the place doesn't thrill me anymore like the way it did when I was young and carefree. It still does. And the sunsets are as beautiful as ever.

not so often seen scene

Every time I go home to my old town, it's only then that I realize how I sorely miss it...

trags

A leading newspaper had on its Sunday edition a headline about two leaders having a word war or as the newspaper called it, verbal assault. Whatever it is called, it makes me sad... and a bit mad. The Boholanos have problems and they need their leaders to lead in the process of solving those problems. But they are creating one more problem instead and the more they hurl insults at each other, the more personal it gets. God help us.

If you're a Boholano, you've probably heard of this one...

Did you know that long time ago, there was railway in Bohol? Of course there was a train too. It traveled around Bohol. It was convenient for the commuters but somehow the Boholanos just couldn't take it anymore because everytime they take a ride, they hear insults every now and then. At first they pretend not hearing it and sometimes they cover their ears with their hands. But 50 miles is just too long a way to go so after ten minutes at most, they just drop their hands and shrug their shoulders and bear it..until that day they rallied to have it stopped once and for all.

I told this story to a friend from Cebu City. Somehow he felt that my story didn't end there. So he looked at me and asked,"So, what happened?" And I said we won. "Buy why, for heaven's sake, would you Boholanos do something stupid like that?" This time he was really cross...angry almost.

And I looked at him with eyes so "serious" and said, "Because everytime the train gets nearer to a station, it blows its horn like this: Boooohoooool! boooooohoooool! boooooohoooool! and after that it won't stop chugging like this: ijah, ahu, ijah, ahu, ijah, ahu, ija ahu....
Joke, joke, joke!

there's a joke...

Boholanos used to be the hillbillies in stories, intended to be funny but somehow end up a bit insulting, depending on who was telling the story and how it was told. I guess every Boholano from ages 20 and up have heard them all, and some have them retold to the younger generation. But not all of the stories belittle the Boholano. In fact, some of them depict him as the wisecrack adventurer.

The most insulting would be the story of a man (Boholano, of course) who was on his way to Manila on a ship. Needing to wash up, he went inside the toilet and kneeled in front the toilet bowl, washing his face.

When I first heard this story, I laughed. I mean, who wouldn't? But on the second time, it made me angry. Why? Because of who told the story (not a Boholano) and how. If not for the smirk on his face, I would just have let it go.

Come to think of it, it's been years since I heard the last of the Boholano jokes... must be the internet... Maybe the jokers became bloggers...
