Boholanos used to be the hillbillies in stories, intended to be funny but somehow end up a bit insulting, depending on who was telling the story and how it was told. I guess every Boholano from ages 20 and up have heard them all, and some have them retold to the younger generation. But not all of the stories belittle the Boholano. In fact, some of them depict him as the wisecrack adventurer.
The most insulting would be the story of a man (Boholano, of course) who was on his way to Manila on a ship. Needing to wash up, he went inside the toilet and kneeled in front the toilet bowl, washing his face.
When I first heard this story, I laughed. I mean, who wouldn't? But on the second time, it made me angry. Why? Because of who told the story (not a Boholano) and how. If not for the smirk on his face, I would just have let it go.
Come to think of it, it's been years since I heard the last of the Boholano jokes... must be the internet... Maybe the jokers became bloggers...
